NRM Presidential campaigns so far the best - Lumumba

Sunday 15th November 2020

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumumba has said that the presidential campaigns of the NRM presidential flag bearer His Excellency Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni are so far the best in the six days of the race.

Speaking at the party headquarters, on Sunday in the weekly press briefing, Lumumba said that the president has been able to meet leaders in Luwero where the campaign journey was launched on Monday before heading to Greater Lango sub-region where he held two strategic meetings with area NRM leaders and West Nile where multiple strategic meetings were conducted in the areas of Madi Alur.

“So far, we have covered the biggest number of districts (Luwero, Lira, Apac, Arua, Nebbi, Moyo, and others) having strategic meetings with leaders in those regions. Through meeting these leaders, the message is sinking into voters. Therefore, we are moving steadily intending to get 12m votes which are already 51 per cent required of a winner”

She adds that, as the president heads to Acholi sub-region in Gulu and Kitgum in his second week of the campaigns, the party’s continuous mobilization strategy of the door to door, house to house, person to person through the district, sub-county, parish and village leaders will be launched. This primary mobilization will target villages, workplaces and educational institutions to explain clearly, NRM’s past, current and future programmes.

“NRM has been winning right from the village to district level in the National Youth Council Structures, People With Disabilities and Elderly persons. These leaders together with our thirty NRM leaders will help in the grass-root mobilization” Lumumba said.

She pointed out several NRM government achievements such as the success story of immunization and education that today makes Uganda the second youngest nation in the world, and the increased road network where tarmac now covers 21,011 km. Up from 800 km in 1986, reduction in crime rates through investment in technology for the police, zero tolerance to corruption and intimidation.

On the issue of COVID- 19 pandemic and campaigns, Lumumba emphasized the maintenance of SOPs and avoiding large gatherings during campaigns as NRM is a proof of “walking the talk” in the fight against the pandemic. She reiterated this calling for a moment of silence in remembrance of the life of Kamuli Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon. Hajjat Rehema Tiwuwe Watongola who succumbed to COVID – 19 AT Mulago hospitals on Saturday, and others who have died of the pandemic. She, however, thanked all NRM supporters and those who welcome them by the roadside but requested them to wear masks, that NRM being the party in power has a mandate to keep everyone safe.

The Secretary-General also asked Ugandans to engage in productive and hard work to graduate from subsistence production reminding them of the four ideological principals of NRM and why NRM is the party to vote for this time round to secure their future.

In attendance was the deputy National Resistance Movement Deputy National Treasurer, Hon. Jacqueline Kyatuhaire.
