NRM boss Kasule Lumumba reiterates Museveni's commitment to following SOPs during campaigns

Friday 18th December 2020

The NRM party Secretary General, Justine kasule Lumumba has re-assured the EC Chair Person Justice Simon Byabakama of the party candidate’s commitment towards strict observance of electoral guidelines especially the SOPs relating to COVID-19 pandemic.

While in a closed interface with Electoral Commission boss and the team yesterday Thursday, Hon. Lumumba said that President Museveni has been very obedient and committed to securing the health of Ugandans while conversing for support across the nation.

The EC, while nominating presidential candidates at Kyambogo tasked all candidates to hold strategic meetings of not more than 70 people, which was later ammended to 200 to limit the spread of Covid-19.

However, the EC on several occasions has accused some candidates for faulting the set guidelines and consequently some like Hon. Kyagulanyi and Patrick Oboi Amuriat have been summoned.

The SG said that the NRM presidential candidate was leading the war against the pandemic and was walking the talk in that direction.

“Our invited guests keep social distancing and sanitize their hands and no food or drinks are served to avoid any possible close contact,” Lumumba reaffirmed, adding that it was only their candidate who does not stop to wave at or address crowds of supporters by the roadside and in trading centres for fears of endangering them and as part of his strict observance of the SOPS.

Lumumba later joined her colleagues, the Secretaries Generals of FDC and NUP together with representatives of ANT and independent Candidate Joseph Kabuleta for a joint interface with the national Electoral Commission and Inspector General of Police. High on the agenda was the need for the country to hold a calm, peaceful, free and fair 2021 elections.

Both Electoral Commission and Secretary Generals agreed in principle to work towards ensuring that the enforcement of electoral guidelines is seen to be applied equally for all presidential candidates; and also, to create environment that facilitates the scaling down on the levels of confrontation and belligerence between the political actors and security.

The commission team was headed by its chairman Justice Simon Byabakama while the IGP was represented by DIGP Edward Ochom. Hon, Lumumba was accompanied by Senior Counsel Oscar Kihika; the Party Director of legal services, Hon. Dombo Emmanuel, the Director Information and Egou Engwau Charles, the SG Executive Assistant.
