Wednesday 29th March 2023

Rt. Hon. Namayanja Rose Nsereko, the Deputy Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement, has emphasized the need for women leaders in politics and civil society to broaden the scope of the women's movement beyond their traditional areas of influence.

During a meeting held at Jinja Nile Resort and convened by the UN Women and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy, Rt. Hon. Namayanja urged women leaders to extend the movement to women in academia, the entertainment industry, sports, the armed forces, cultural institutions, and other spheres of society.

She emphasized the importance of inter-generational dialogues to equip young women with the necessary tools and skills to sustain the women's movement. Rt. Hon. Namayanja also called on women leaders to champion the women's agenda, regardless of their political affiliations, and to work collaboratively and support each other in achieving their goals.

The meeting's theme was "Reflecting on the Journey of Women in Uganda: The Missing Links and What Needs to be Done." Women leaders from various political parties and civil society organizations attended the event, which provided an opportunity for reflection and strategizing on how to further advance women's rights in Uganda.
