Museveni kicks off campaigns in oil-rich Bunyoro Sub-region

Friday 18th December 2020

National Resistance Movement party presidential candidate, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, is today in Kibaale district, Bunyoro sub-region for his scientific campaigns. Museveni will meet and address a select team of NRM leaders including party flag bearers from districts of Kibaale, Kagadi and Kakumiro districts. He will ask for re-election through recounting NRM achievements registered in the area.

Kibaale, a district found in the oil-rich Bunyoro Sub-Region of Western Ugand has 8 sub counties, 30 Parishes and 233 villages.

In road infrastructure, the NRM government has made movement from Kibaale to Kampala easy with improved road network. This has been realized after the completion of Mubende-Kakumiro-Kibaale-Kagadi road. For centuries, travelling from the rural district of Kibaale to Kampala through Mubende was a nightmare. Kibaale to Mubende, a distance of 104km, would take two days in the 1980s and reaching Kampala would require a minimum of three days. But today, with the new road network, the jourmey takes approximately three hours.

The road network has not only eased transport, but also created opportunities for roadside vendors to earn a living.

Being an oil-rich sub-region, many oil roads have been completed while others are being constructed in Bunyoro. These roads will enhance income generation in the region.

In the education sector, Kibaale district currently has 155 Primary Schools and 15 Secondary Schools. These Schools offer Universal Primary Education and Universal Secondary Education, a government education interventions introduced in 1997 and 2007 respectively. The two government programmes have seen literacy levels in Kibaale shooting up in recent decades.  According to the 2014 National Population and Housing Census, about 87 percent of primary school going age (6-12 years) were attending school in Kibaale district.

In poverty eradication programmes, over 200 organized groups in Kibaale district were verified to benefit from the Presidential Initiative on Wealth and job creation 'emyooga' funds. These groups will receive over sh150 millions in the three constituencies of Buyanja, Buyanja East and Kibaale. The fund will benefit Journalists, musicians, boda boda riders, tailors, market vendors, saloon operators, private teachers among others.

Today the fruits of the Uganda Women’s Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP) and youth livelihood program, channeled through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development are evident in the district, with more groups making big strides in fighting poverty among women and youth in Uganda.

Under youth and women empowerment, Kibaale district so far has a total of 109 funded groups under Youth livelihood programme and Women fund, where at least 911 million shillings has been injected.
