Monday 12th June 2023

The Government of Uganda has today signed a contract with Abubaker Technical Services and General Supplies Limited, a local company, for the Rehabilitation of Matugga-Semuto-Kapeeka Road (41 km).

The contract signing event, witnessed by various stakeholders, was officiated by the Deputy Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement, Rt. Hon. Namayanja Rose Nsereko. During the ceremony, Namayanja expressed her gratitude to the government for its commitment to fulfilling its promises, particularly regarding road infrastructure development.

"This project was pledged by the NRM government in its manifesto, and it is now being fulfilled. I commend the government for its dedication to implementing all its promises, especially in improving road infrastructure nationwide," Namayanja remarked.

The Matugga-Semuto-Kapeeka Road holds significant importance in connecting businesses within the districts of greater Luwero, including Luwero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola. Namayanja emphasized that the road plays a crucial role in enhancing connectivity within the Luwero triangle enclave, linking various areas such as Zirobwe, Kabwama, Kituuma, Kakiri, and Butalangu.

"As a party, we are delighted to witness the Ministry and Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) implementing our manifesto. We are on track with our commitments," Namayanja added.

Beyond party lines, Namayanja acknowledged the broader significance of the project, which will benefit local communities and foster regional development.

General Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport, congratulated Abubaker Technical Services, the local contractor selected for the project. He urged the company to rise to the challenge and demonstrate its capabilities in executing the project successfully.

"I extend my congratulations to Abubaker Technical Services for winning this contract as a local contractor. However, I would like to remind you that this is a challenge. You must prove yourselves, as failure to do so would send the wrong message," Gen. Wamala emphasized.

Providing further details, Ms Allen Kagina, Executive Director of the Uganda National Roads Authority, shared that the estimated cost of the project is UgX 217 billion, primarily allocated for civil works. She highlighted that the road's design will maintain its existing alignment, minimizing the need for extensive land acquisition. The UNRA's in-house team will oversee the project's supervision, ensuring its successful implementation.

The rehabilitation of the Matugga-Semuto-Kapeeka Road is a significant milestone in improving transportation infrastructure in Uganda's central region. The government's commitment to enhancing road connectivity demonstrates its determination to fulfil its promises and drive national development.

With construction set to begin in August 2023, stakeholders and the public eagerly anticipate the positive impact that the revitalized road will have on the local economy, trade, and overall convenience of transportation for residents in the Wakiso, Luweero, and Nakaseke districts.
