The NRM National Treasurer, Hon. Amb. Barbara Nekesa has urged the people of the Bukedi sub region to maintain unity as a core to the subregion’s growth and development. Bukedi includes Busia, Butaleja, Tororo, Kibuku, Pallisa, Budaka and Butebo districts.
Nekesa who has been the Sub regional Coordinator in the concluded elections made the call today as she interacted with a team of leaders that spearheaded the Parish-based Grassroot Mobilization strategy which saw improvement in the NRM performance especially in the presidential results with an average of over 70 percentage compared to the party’s poor performance in the 2021 elections. The meeting took place at the NRM headquarters at plot 10, Kyadondo Road.
“I commend you for delivering an overwhelming victory to our presidential candidate and our parliamentary candidates across the Bukedi sub region but now that elections are done, we need to remain united and work for the welfare of our local people. Without it, progress will be slow,”Nekesa said as she called on senior leaders, elected leaders, cultural leaders, and community influencers to forge a common direction.
Although, socially there may be divisions with every district having a separate cultural institution and different language, Nekesa said such factors should not be a subject of division.
“We have good infrastructure connecting our people and universal education programs that have created a common language to improve communication and facilitate the population’s social economic transformation,” the team leader said.
Economic Mobilization
Nekesa urged the leaders to whip the locals into embracing government empowerment programs in order to create household incomes.
“You have done so well politically but now, the time has come to shift focus towards economic mobilization. Our people need to be guided on how to create household wealth through embracing programs like the parish development model, emyooga, Four Acre model among others,” Nekesa told the leaders.
She also cautioned the people of the sub region against the practice of land fragmentation, saying it limits production.
“Unlike some other areas where households own vast hectares of land, locals in the Bukedi sub region should be guided on intensive production due to limited land. The small land we have left must be protected and productively utilized. Our youth must be guided away from selling land for short-term gains. Once land is gone, it is gone. We must prevent a future where people lose both their land and their livelihoods,” She guided.
The Director of Mobilization at the NRM Secretariat, Dr Rosemary Seninde said it was a great opportunity that the team was selected to spearhead mobilization across the Bukedi villages.
“After elections, our task shifts to nation building and wealth creation. The victory we celebrate is not an accident, it was built on your sleepless nights, loyalty, resilience and hard work. You represented the party secretariat well and we are proud of you for mobilizing with commitment and passion.
She praised the parished-based mobilization strategy for the unprecedented results of over 72% for our presidential candidate, pleading to be continuously closely involved with the teams in all party programs.
The NRM Commissioner at the Electoral Commission, Amb. James Kinobe congratulated the secretariat and the entire party structures for pulling off a very successful mobilization strategy; he wondered how some opposition elements can claim vote rigging.
“Our National Chairman H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni commissioned all of us to mobilise support throughout the villages and the results are very visible across all positions from the presidential level to the parishes,” Amb. Kinobe said.
Mr Rogers Mulindwa, who has been the Sub regional Coordinator commended the team for hard work and commitment in delivering what he described as historic win.
“If I am not wrong, the victory in the concluded elections can only be compared to that of 1996. It is not by coincidence but by the deliberate efforts of the NRM leaders from the secretariat up to the village leaders,” Mulindwa said.
