NRM officials camp in Kisoro ahead of Bukimbiri by-election

Tuesday 12th July 2022

The Court of Appeal last month nullified the victory of the ruling party candidate, Hon. Kwizera Eddie Wagahungu in Bukimbiri county citing use of defective ballot papers and ordered for a fresh election.

It is against this background that officials from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat led by the director for Communication, Hon. Emmanuel Dombo have pitched camp in Kisoro district to prepare ahead of the said by-election slated for August 11th, 2022.

Mr Emmanuel Dombo while talking to the media said they are in Kisoro and specifically in Bukimbiri County to gather views from stakeholders and harmonise leaders of the party and endeavour to build consensus.

“We intend to convene several meetings of various categories who include; NRM district leaders, women leaders, members of the informal sector, social, and opinion leaders among other groups. This is aimed at leaving no stone unturned in a bid to reclaim NRM victory,” Hon. Dombo noted.

Before nominations of candidates, the NRM party intends to convene an expanded conference to formally unveil Mr Eddie Kwizera as a flag bearer in the forthcoming Bukimbiri poll.

Dombo who noted the overwhelming majority support for the ruling party in the district revealed some internal disagreements among members but promised to iron them out to improve better working relations during campaigns.

“We enjoy massive support in the entire Kisoro district. The few challenges existing are internal within the NRM and we have already started on them because the Secretary-General, Rt.Hon. Richard Todwong had preliminary meetings with leaders in the district.

We do believe by the time we reach nominations and elections thereafter, all exiting intrigues would be solved to foster a united front behind the flagbearer,” He added.

Mr Eddie Kwizera said his campaign team and supporters are very eager to vote for him again to go back to parliament.

He, however, downplayed the existing internal struggles and blamed them on self-seekers who hail outside Bukimbiri.

“The people of Bukimbiri are one and united behind me. They know the NRM party, they understand my leadership character and performance,” Kwizera said.

Dombo calls for unity

In his first interaction with a section of leaders led by Bufumbira North MP Hon. John Kamara Nizeyimana held in Kisoro town, Hon. Dombo called for unity and restraint of members from indulging in divisive politics which he says may risk NRM support and performance.

“I encourage you to raise any concerns and grievances through proper party structures and forums up to National Chairman Yoweri Museveni to respond,” Dombo said.
