The National Resistance Movement (NRM) membership register digitization exercise in the Bunyoro sub-region has reached 90%, supervisors there revealed.
Sirian Bagamba, the regional supervisor, told the media on Wednesday despite the sub-region having nine districts, 132 sub-counties, 552 parishes and 3,478 villages, the exercise was moving smoothly.
“Compared to the rest of the country, Bunyoro is one of the biggest centres in the entire country. As such we were given 65 data entrants and nine verifiers including two IT supervisors,” Bagamba said.
“We started the exercise for the last two-and-a-half weeks we have been here capturing data in the region. The sub-region is big and the number of villages is many. So far data captured shows that there was a high record by the new entrants in the register,” he added.
Bagamba said they were so far through with 90% of the exercise. “Areas like Hoima City, Hoima District and landing sites like Kaiso Tonya and Buseruka all have had a big influx of members, registration,” Bagamba said.
“As such, we have very many cases of people having finished exercise books and even registering in another second new book or the right at the back of the existing register. I think this is a good step, right step in the direction for the NRM,” he added.
According to Bagamba, if these numbers are well-mobilized and turn into voters in 2026, they will perform a very big voting bloc for not only presidential but also parliamentary and local government councils.
“This register is not an end in itself. It has been designed as part of one of the materials for conducting internal elections. You know, the voters' register forms one of the best principles of conducting free elections,” Bagamba said.
“It is with this data captured, register updated and finally display before the primaries that will ensure that the party holds free and fair elections during primaries.”
