The President of the Republic of Uganda and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, His Excellency Gen. (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has paid tribute to the people of Busoga for their unwavering contribution during struggles that led to the liberation of Uganda.
The President was officiating today, Tuesday, at the 43rd Tarehe Sita anniversary celebrations at Busesa in Bugweri district, Busoga sub-region. He was in the company of the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Kataaha Museveni.
"I salute the people of Busoga who participated in our struggles. Some of those who received medals today were children of those who were executed by Idi Amin," President Museveni remarked.
Mr. Museveni also recounted the past dark periods that were marked by significant losses of life in 1966 and 1986. “About 800,000 people were killed by the government. And in the Luwero triangle alone, we lost close to 300,000," he revealed.
The President expressed gratitude to the neighbouring countries, particularly Tanzania and Mozambique, for their support during the fight against oppression in Uganda.
Acknowledging Uganda's progress since liberation, President Museveni attributed the nation's development to the acceptance and implementation of visionary ideas. "I thank the people of Uganda for accepting our ideas. You have seen that our ideas were correct on the economy, security, etc. That's why we have developed so much," he affirmed. He highlighted the persistent challenge of corruption derailing service delivery, stressing the imperative to combat it effectively.
On security, the commander-in-chief underscored the collaboration of regional efforts in addressing emerging threats. "Many of the security problems are now regional. We need regional intervention, which we are working on," he said. He expressed satisfaction with the existing good relations with neighbouring countries and advocated for a regional approach to security challenges.In memory of bush war veteran and politician, the late Al-Hajj Kirunda Kiveijinja, the President committed to the completion of the district headquarters project initiated by the former.
"On the district headquarters that Kiveijinja had started, I will talk to the army to finish it," he affirmed, demonstrating his dedication to fulfilling promises made for the continued development and prosperity of Uganda.
Among the dignitaries that graced the celebrations were the Vice President H.E. Maj. (Rtd.) Jessica Alupo, the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Lukia Nakadama, the NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, Ministers, Members of Parliament, and religious leaders, among others.
