TORORO – NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi has called on party leaders in the Tororo Sub-region to intensify grassroots mobilisation and ensure a massive turnout for the forthcoming Local Council I (LC I) and Village Women Council elections.
Dr Tanga made the call on Sunday in Tororo while convening the NRM Sub-regional Entry Meeting for the Tororo sub-region, where he met district party leaders, elected officials and other stakeholders to prepare for the upcoming grassroots electoral activities.
The meeting focused on orienting and equipping leaders with the knowledge and skills required to coordinate the forthcoming sub-county and village barazas, which are expected to rally support for NRM flag bearers ahead of the elections.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Tanga described the Local Council system as the cornerstone of government service delivery, saying effective leadership at the village level is essential for the successful implementation of government programmes.
He noted that electing NRM leaders at the LC I, LC II and Village Women Council levels would provide the party with a strong grassroots foundation to effectively implement its manifesto and strengthen the link between communities and government.
"The Local Council system remains the fulcrum of government's service delivery machinery. Electing NRM cadres at the village level is fundamental because it gives the party and government a firm foundation to continue delivering on the commitments made to Ugandans," Dr Tanga said.
He urged party leaders to use the village barazas to mobilise support for the party's official candidates and ensure that NRM supporters participate in large numbers during the elections.
Dr Tanga emphasised that grassroots elections should not be taken lightly, noting that strong village structures are critical to sustaining the party's organisation, promoting accountability and ensuring effective service delivery.
He challenged leaders to work together, remain united and take the party message directly to communities, saying victory in the grassroots elections would strengthen the NRM ahead of future political activities.
The Tororo engagement is part of the NRM Secretariat's nationwide sub-regional mobilisation campaign aimed at preparing party structures for the Village Women Council elections scheduled for July 23 and the LC I Chairperson elections on July 28.
Through the countrywide meetings, the party is seeking to strengthen grassroots structures, enhance mobilisation and secure overwhelming victories for its official flag bearers.
