ANKOLE: Leaders of NRM at all levels in the Ankole subregion have been urged to unite behind the party flagbearers ahead of LC I and women council elections.
The Ankole subregion Coordinator and Commissioner of the NRM Electoral Commission Dr James Tweheyo made the call today as he met subcounty chairpersons of NRM in Sheema and Ibanda districts in separate meetings while monitoring the leaders' readiness for the upcoming elections. He was accompanied by Vice Chairperson of the NRM Womens League for Western Region Mrs Enid Mwesigye.
The meetings formed part of the NRM’s nationwide efforts to strengthen grassroots structures and ensure maximum participation in the ongoing electoral process.
Addressing the leaders, Dr Tweheyo emphasized that unity within the party remains critical to securing victory and advancing the NRM’s agenda of socio-economic transformation.
“All leaders must put their differences aside and support NRM flag bearers. The strength of our party lies in our unity and our ability to work together for a common purpose,” he said as he urged leaders to rise above personal disagreements, factional interests, and past political contests and instead focus on consolidating support for official NRM candidates.
Mr Tweheyo further challenged the leaders from the district upto the village level to intensify grassroots mobilization and encourage citizens to actively participate in the Village Barazas and subsequent elections.

Tweheyo called for maximum participation of tomorrow's barazas, saying it offers a platform for strengthening inclusivity amd internal democracy within the party and ensuring that communities take ownership of the leadership selection process at the grassroots.
He reminded leaders that the party's National Chairman and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has consistently emphasized the importance of grassroots participation in building a strong and accountable leadership structure, urging cadres to heed that call by mobilizing every eligible supporter to take part in the exercise.
“The President has called upon our people to participate actively in these elections. It is our responsibility as leaders to rally the grassroots, ensure transparency, and encourage every supporter to be part of this important process,” he said.
Dr Tweheyo also underscored the importance of discipline and loyalty to party decisions, noting that unity behind official candidates is essential for protecting the gains made by the NRM and sustaining its grassroots strength.
His remarks come as NRM leaders across Ankole and other regions continue final preparations for the Village Barazas and Women Council elections, which party officials have described as the foundation of the movement’s organizational structure.
“The future of the party begins in the village. When we are united at the grassroots, we are unstoppable as a movement,” he said.
