The National Resistance Movement (NRM) registered encouraging progress in its grassroots mobilisation drive across the Teso Sub-region on Wednesday as Village Barazas were held in several districts to prepare members for the Village Women’s Council elections and the forthcoming LC I chairperson polls.
In Soroti City, party members gathered at Obute A Cell at Arapai Primary School, where Soroti City NRM Women's League Chairperson Rachel Francis Adyango urged members to elect committed NRM LC I chairpersons capable of working closely with Women’s Councils to ensure communities fully benefit from government programmes.
In Kumi District, Village Barazas and mobilisation meetings took place in several areas, including Wulo, Asinge and Okutot villages in Tisai Sub-county, where NRM flag bearers pledged to strengthen grassroots leadership, promote unity and expand access to government programmes.
Reports from the district indicated that mobilisation was strongest in Ogooma and Kumi sub-counties, while several other areas used the opportunity to orient LC I flag bearers on the electoral process.
Amuria District also witnessed active mobilisation, with leaders in Awojangur Village calling on members to remain united and overwhelmingly support NRM candidates in the forthcoming elections.
Similar messages of unity and participation were delivered by party leaders across the district.
In Kaberamaido District, a good number of villages successfully held Barazas, confirming that facilitation reached village structures and enabled members to discuss preparations for the elections.
Although a few villages postponed meetings because of competing activities such as markets, burials and official engagements, local leaders committed to holding the remaining Barazas before polling day.
Across the sub-region, the Barazas provided an opportunity to verify party registers, popularise NRM flag bearers and encourage members to participate in the elections.
Party leaders reiterated that unity at the grassroots remains key to consolidating the NRM's support and delivering strong victories in the Village Women’s Council elections on July 23 and the LC I chairperson elections on July 28.
The Village Barazas form part of the NRM's nationwide grassroots mobilisation campaign taking place in more than 72,000 villages across the country as the party strengthens its structures ahead of the village elections.
