The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Director of Communication and Publicity, Hon. Emmanuel Lumala Dombo, has urged party media activists to uphold discipline and ensure the dissemination of accurate information.
He made the call today while meeting media activists from the Greater Kampala Metropolitan area under their umbrella body, Umoja wa Wanahabari wa Chama, led by their chairperson, Mr. Enock Sserwadda, at the NRM Electoral Commission offices on Plot 13 Kyadondo Road.
Hon. Dombo stressed the importance of media activists aligning themselves with verified government and party information and being well-equipped to communicate effectively with the public.
“Information is key and vital for any organisation. As the party in leadership, we have to work with media activists who understand the effectiveness of communication and the responsibility that comes with disseminating information,” Dombo said.
He noted that, as the Director of Communication and Publicity, he speaks on behalf of the Party, the Central Executive Committee (CEC) and the Secretariat, strictly relaying information received from the party leadership.
He cautioned media activists against making statements or sharing information they do not fully understand, warning that such lapses could breed controversy, confusion or conflicting messages among the public.
Dombo proposed regular engagement and training of media activists preferably on a monthly basis in partnership with the Ministry of Information and National Guidance. The training, he said, would equip them with facts, accurate statistics and a clearer understanding of government programmes, which they can then explain to the public in clear and accessible language.
He also commended the activists for their dedication and encouraged them to strengthen their association, build cohesion and guard against individuals who may seek membership for personal gain.
Mr. Dombo announced that the party would facilitate a meeting with the political hosts of the various media platforms where the activists operate, with the aim of fostering better coordination and mutual understanding.
He further urged the association’s leadership to build a disciplined and well-organised team capable of handling cases of indiscipline and misconduct among members.
He challenged the Greater Kampala team to be a model for other regions, noting that Kampala is a hub of information and communication and should set the standard for organisation and professionalism.
Dombo encouraged the association to consider issuing identity cards to members to strengthen their sense of identity and improve the membership structure. He also suggested that the association could explore evolving into a savings association to support members’ welfare and development.
“As the Director of Communication and Publicity, I will ensure that this association stands, grows and remains relevant,” he pledged.
In his remarks, Mr. Enock Sserwadda thanked Hon. Dombo for his continued guidance and support and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to remaining visible and active on the ground as foot soldiers for the party and government.
“We are committed to ensuring that this association remains relevant and vital in disseminating information to the general public through the channels and platforms we use for communication,” Sserwadda said.
